Rhode Island was started by the country of England and was located in the New England colonies. Roger Williams founded the colony in 1636. He was an independent preacher in search for religious freedom after he had been banished from Massachusetts. He thought this unfair so he started a policy of religious and political freedom on his land.
Rhode Island had a governor, Phillip Sherman, and legislature granted in 1663 by Charles II of England.
The economy was based on fishing and lumbering.
In 1639 William Coddington, John Clarke, Anne Hutchinson and others left Massachusetts in search of religious freedom. They founded Newport, Rhode Island.
In 1643, Samuel Gorton, John Greene and others founded a new Rhode Island settlement. They left Providence believeing that only true liberty was estrablished under true English law.
The social customs were the "norms". Mostly people believeing in the speration of church and state it was made just for those people.
In 1774 Rhode Island was the first colony to have slaves.
